The market volume for fresh peaches and nectarines in Greece experienced a significant contraction from 2018 to 2023, falling from 810.4 thousand tons to 459.2 thousand tons. This decline was not linear, with a notable drop in 2021 to 539.1 thousand tons followed by a partial recovery to 770.0 thousand tons in 2022, before decreasing again the following year. Domestic production followed a similar trend, decreasing from 968.7 thousand tons to 574.8 thousand tons over the same period.

In 2024, market dynamics were influenced by several specific factors. Production was reported to have increased by approximately 8% compared to 2023, reaching around 700 thousand tons. This occurred alongside government subsidies granted to producers for orchards with significant damage from fruit deformities and heavy August rains, which had rendered produce unmarketable. Concurrently, growers contended with persistent insect pressures affecting crops and a continued reduction in peach cultivation area, which fell to 178 thousand stremmata. Despite these challenges, consumer demand for table peaches and nectarines remained robust, supporting producer prices.

Peach and nectarine production in Greece declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 890.6 thousand tonnes, marking a 3.9% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 38.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.6%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 968.7 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest increase of 51.1%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest decline of 4.3%.
