Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, Greek kiwifruit production steadily increased, having doubled since 2014, supported by concentrated cultivation in northern regions like Central Macedonia and Epirus. This growth was reinforced by strict adherence to trade and sanitary specifications, bolstering the reputation of Greek kiwifruit as a quality export product. By 2020, the development of new export markets, including Brazil and Israel through bilateral agreements, further stimulated output.

In the following years, despite pandemic challenges, the sector continued to expand with the introduction of new varieties such as yellow and red kiwifruit to meet rising global demand. By 2023, Greek producers gained additional momentum from reduced production in Italy due to disease and adverse weather, allowing Greece to increase its share in key markets including Europe, China, and the United States. Simultaneously, stricter rules for harvesting, transportation, and packaging, with fixed start dates for the season, aimed to maintain quality and prevent illicit trade.

By 2024, the official opening of Vietnam's market to Greek kiwifruit from March 1, following a phytosanitary inspection, marked a significant milestone reflecting years of systematic export promotion. High external demand led to record export revenues exceeding €305 million and raised producer prices, averaging €1.62 per kilogram. This success spurred substantial new planting, though nurseries faced a shortage of young plants. Greece established itself as the world's third-largest kiwifruit exporter by value, demonstrating sustained growth based on variety diversification and rigorous quality control.
