Earlier Report Observations

The market for shelled almonds in the Americas expanded strongly from 2018 to 2020, with volume rising from 1 067 thousand tonnes to 1 460 thousand tonnes. This growth was primarily driven by increasing global demand, especially from Asian and European consumers, which boosted almond consumption. The entry of new almond-based product segments, such as snacks and chocolate bars, further stimulated demand, while a significant increase in U.S. production, concentrated in California, supported the market expansion.

After peaking in 2020, the market volume declined to 1 365 thousand tonnes in 2021 and 1 207 thousand tonnes in 2022. This contraction coincided with exchange rate fluctuations and volatile international almond prices, which affected trade dynamics. By 2023, the market showed signs of stabilization, with volume edging up slightly to 1 219 thousand tonnes.
