Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the European fresh grape market experienced notable changes. In 2018, market volume stood at 31 161 thousand tonnes, supported by investments in seedless table grape varieties aimed at increasing consumption in new markets. The following year, physical volume dropped to 27 664 thousand tonnes, but market value rose to 79 627 million US dollars as consumer preferences shifted towards premium and organic products, raising average prices. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains and increased transport costs, leading to a decline in market value to 59 982 million US dollars, even though physical consumption grew to 28 863 thousand tonnes due to heightened demand for healthy snacks.

Pandemic-related effects continued into 2021, sustaining demand for premium and organic grapes, which kept market value elevated at 69 155 million US dollars despite a decrease in physical volume to 27 693 thousand tonnes. By 2022, drought in Italy and rising production costs contributed to higher prices, while ongoing investments in new varieties and premiumization helped drive growth in both physical volume (29 248 thousand tonnes) and market value (71 121 million US dollars). In 2023, climatic challenges and constrained supply led to a downturn, with physical volume falling to 25 518 thousand tonnes and market value dropping to 64 730 million US dollars.
