The European orange market volume stood at 7.2 million metric tons in 2018. It declined to 6.2 million t in 2019, influenced by new EU restrictions on imports of South African citrus, which tightened supply.

The COVID-19 pandemic spurred a sharp rise in demand for citrus in 2020, pushing market volume up to 8.4 million t. Growth continued to 9.1 million t in 2021, as increased production and exports from Egypt enhanced available imports.

In 2022, the market contracted to 7.9 million t, affected by further EU import constraints and a global production drop amid adverse weather. Volume stabilized near 8.0 million t in 2023, sustained by robust demand from the orange juice sector and ongoing consumer focus on health.

In 2020, Europe produced 6 393 K t of oranges, marking a 4.7% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 5.6%, which translates to an annualized rate of 1.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 6 518 K t. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 6.3%, while the most significant increase was in 2018, at 7.6%.

Exports oranges from Europe

Exports in kind, K t

Oranges exports from Europe declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 1 230 K t, down by 51.4% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 52.3%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -21.9%. The peak export volume was in 2018 at 2 617 K t, and the largest increase was recorded that same year at 1.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, oranges exports from Europe were distributed among a wide range of partner countries. Switzerland accounted for 2.5% of exports in kind, Norway for 1.0%, and Canada for 1.0%, with these three countries together representing just 4.5% of total export flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

In 2020, Europe's oranges exports totaled 2 442 M $ US, showing a strong rise of 24.5% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 18.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 962 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 10.2%.

During 2017–2020, Switzerland was a key buyer of oranges from Europe, accounting for 3.4% of exports in value terms, followed by China at 1.3% and Norway at 1.2%. However, their combined share reached only 5.9% of total exports in value terms, with the remaining 94.1% spread across many other partners.

Europe imported approximately 3 249 K t of oranges in 2020, up by 25.3% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 16%, with an annualized rate of 5.1%. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 2 592 K t, while the highest was in 2018 at 3 275 K t. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 20.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, oranges imports to Europe were relatively evenly distributed among partner countries. South Africa accounted for 16.3% of imports in kind, Egypt for 15.8%, and Turkey for 4.2%, with these three countries jointly representing only 36.4% of total import flows.
