The sheep and goat meat market in Côte d'Ivoire expanded strongly from 2018 to 2023, with total volume rising from 31 613 t to 61 891 t. This growth was primarily driven by increasing domestic consumption supported by population growth and rising living standards. Government programs backing the meat and dairy sectors, alongside protective measures like compensatory duties on imported poultry, created a favorable environment for local production.

A notable acceleration occurred in 2022, when production surged by over 19 000 t to 57 690 t. This jump was facilitated by a drop in animal feed prices, which reduced production costs and improved farmer margins. Furthermore, sustained cultural and religious demand, particularly for the Tabaski festival, provided a consistent seasonal incentive for higher output.

The market structure remained characterized by traditional distribution channels and small-scale farming. Regulatory actions, including strengthened veterinary controls and rules for animal product sales, were implemented to ensure food safety. In 2024, authorities launched sector reform workshops and allocated significant agricultural funding, indicating continued policy attention to the meat value chain.
