Goat meat production in Côte d'Ivoire rose from 6 671 tons in 2018 to 9 183 tons in 2021, driven by protective trade policies and regulatory measures. The government extended a compensatory levy of 1 000 FCFA per kg on goat meat imports in 2018, which was maintained throughout the period, shielding domestic producers from foreign competition. Droughts in the Sahel region in 2018 impacted imported livestock supply, further supporting local output. In 2020, new sanitary requirements for animal products were introduced, raising packaging and labeling standards for goat meat.

Production jumped by 53% to 14 061 tons in 2022 after authorities decided to apply the compensatory duty for ten years, providing long-term certainty for investment. The growth continued in 2023, with output reaching 15 343 tons, aided by the launch of the 'Casdar Cabri +' project that aimed to strengthen the goat meat sector through breeder training and production support. Regulatory clarity was also provided in 2023 when it was clarified that goat meat was not subject to a ban on pork marketing.
