This coincided with the extension of a compensatory duty on imports of poultry meat and edible offal from January 2020, which indirectly influenced the pork market and helped sustain a high reliance on imports, estimated at up to 80% of supply.

From 2021 to 2023, market volume contracted to 15 651 t, but domestic production expanded by 27% to 13 464 t as imports plummeted 74% to 2 191 t. The production growth was driven by increasing urban consumer appetite for pork, especially in Abidjan where local dishes like kédjénou de porc boosted popularity, alongside dietary shifts that supported a broader meat products market valued at $1.5 billion in 2022.
