Earlier Report Observations

The ASEAN market for sheep and goat meat contracted in physical volume from 505.3 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 413.7 thousand tonnes in 2021. A recovery phase began in 2022, with consumption rising to 450.6 thousand tonnes and reaching 477.5 thousand tonnes in 2023.

Market value showed a different trajectory, growing from 2.7 billion US dollars in 2018 to a peak of 3.7 billion in 2022, before moderating to 3.4 billion in 2023. This surge in value, particularly in 2021 and 2022, indicates significant price inflation during those years.

Domestic production followed a similar volatile pattern, declining to 368.9 thousand tonnes in 2021 before recovering to 418.6 thousand tonnes by 2023. Imports remained a substantial part of supply, peaking at 64.0 thousand tonnes in 2022.
