Earlier Report Observations

ASEAN's pork market volume declined from 7.1 million t in 2018 to 6.6 million t in 2020, primarily due to outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) which reduced domestic production. Enhanced biosecurity and disease control measures helped stabilize hog herds and limit further losses.

From 2021, the market recovered, reaching 7.1 million t in 2023. This growth was driven by a sharp rise in imports of frozen pork, which more than doubled from 287 thousand t in 2020 to 608 thousand t in 2022, with Brazil, Russia, and Canada as key suppliers. Strong local demand, with per capita consumption in major markets like Vietnam among the highest globally, supported this expansion. Large producers, including Dabaco and CP Group, modernized farming and supply chains, contributing to a rebound in domestic output.

In value terms, the market experienced more pronounced swings, peaking at USD 23.3 billion in 2020 and USD 24.4 billion in 2023. Rising pork prices were fueled by strong demand, increased feed costs, and global supply chain pressures. Competitive prices for imported pork also exerted pressure on local producers, further stimulating import volumes.
