Africa's sheep and goat meat production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 6 884 thousand tonnes, marking a 3.0% year-on-year increase. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 10.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.5%.

The value of sheep and goat meat production in Africa fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 36 124 million US dollars, down 1.4% from 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, production value increased by 3.2%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 1.0%. The peak value occurred in 2018 at 38 228 million US dollars, which saw the largest increase of 9.2%. The most significant decline was in 2019, at 4.2%.

Exports sheep and goat meat from Africa

Exports in kind, t

Sheep and goat meat exports from Africa have risen for the second consecutive year. In 2020, export volumes reached 30 069 tonnes, showing a modest 7.4% gain compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 2.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.8%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 27 812 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 5.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Arab Emirates (52.6% of export volumes), Saudi Arabia (21.6%), and Oman (4.3%) dominated Africa's sheep and goat meat export structure. Together, these three countries accounted for 78.5% of total export flows.

In 2020, sheep and goat meat exports from Africa totaled 157.8 million US dollars, reflecting a slight increase of 2.8% from 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 4.6%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 1.6%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 153.4 million US dollars, which experienced the largest drop of 7.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 166.3 million US dollars.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Arab Emirates (54.8% of export value), Saudi Arabia (23.4%), and Oman (3.8%) led Africa's sheep and goat meat export structure in value terms. Collectively, they represented 81.9% of total export flows.

Sheep and goat meat imports into Africa have declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Africa imported a total of {value_last_year} tonnes, which is 22.8% less than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 48.4%, with an average annual decline rate of 19.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the leading sources for sheep and goat meat imports into Africa were Australia (39.7% of import volumes), New Zealand (9.7%), and Spain (8.4%). Together, these three countries accounted for 57.9% of total import flows.
