Coniferous roundwood production in Sub-Saharan Africa began the period at 22 869 thousand m³ in 2018, supported by robust growth in South Africa's wood-processing sector where output had expanded by more than 25% since 2014. The market benefited from a diversified buyer base and integrated value chains supplying pulp, paper, and construction materials. However, production dipped to 21 786 thousand m³ in 2019 even as the forestry industry remained productive, with afforestation plans aiming to add future roundwood supply and nearly all industrial roundwood already certified to Forestry Stewardship Council standards.

Output recovered to 23 153 thousand m³ in 2020 and continued rising to 23 663 thousand m³ in 2021. This rebound was driven by global market conditions: worldwide wood fiber costs had been climbing for over two years, pushing up prices for pulplogs and wood chips. At the same time, supply chain disruptions and the Russia‑Ukraine conflict elevated shipping and fuel costs, further increasing timber prices and making local production more attractive. South Africa's export-oriented industry, which ships about 70% of timber products abroad, responded to these international price signals.

Production stabilized near 23 600–23 700 thousand m³ in 2022–2023, reaching 23 740 thousand m³ in 2023. By late 2022, global demand for lumber had declined, easing prices for sawlogs from earlier peaks. The ongoing ripple effects of the Russia‑Ukraine conflict on supply chains and costs continued to influence the market, balancing out earlier growth pressures and leading to a plateau in roundwood output.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, production of roundwood coniferous reached 23 153 K m³ in 2020, marking a modest increase of 6.3% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 8.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 2.7%. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a decline of 4.7%, while the strongest growth was observed in 2018, at 7.1%.
