From 2018 to 2021, the particle board market in Sub-Saharan Africa expanded from 1 148 thousand m³ to 1 480 thousand m³, marking a period of growth. Production volumes remained relatively stable, while import levels rose and export levels declined.

The market reached its peak in 2021, after which it contracted to 1 281 thousand m³ in 2022 and further to 989 thousand m³ in 2023. This downturn was accompanied by a sharp increase in exports and a reduction in imports.

Throughout the period, domestic production showed minor fluctuations, decreasing slightly from 1 222 thousand m³ to 1 196 thousand m³ by 2023.

Exports of particle board from Sub-Saharan Africa showed considerable volatility between 2017 and 2020. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 211 thousand cubic meters, followed by a sharp drop to 17 thousand cubic meters in 2019, representing a 92.0% decline. From 2017 to 2020, Australia was the leading destination for particle board exports from Sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for 16.1% of total volume. Portugal followed with 2.2%, and France with 1.6%. Together, these three markets represented 19.9% of all export flows.

Between 2017 and 2020, Australia was the top market for particle board exports from Sub-Saharan Africa in value terms, making up 14.7% of the total. France accounted for 6.0%, and Portugal for 2.0%. During the 2017–2020 period, Finland was the largest source for particle board imports into Sub-Saharan Africa by volume, contributing 1.6%. China supplied 1.4%, and Portugal 1.3%. Together, these three countries accounted for 4.2% of total import flows.
