Earlier Report Observations
Production of coniferous roundwood in Oceania began to decline after 2018, when global consumption of industrial roundwood reached a peak of 252 million cubic meters, supporting export volumes. The subsequent drop in Asia-Pacific exports and the first global consumption decrease since 2017 in 2020 reduced external demand, contributing to the fall in domestic output from 53 924 thousand m³ in 2018 to 50 101 thousand m³ in 2020.
The domestic market volume, however, expanded from 27 183 thousand m³ in 2020 to around 29 057 thousand m³ in 2022, driven primarily by a sharp 9,341% surge in imports into Australia during 2021. This import spike temporarily increased supply, but the market retracted to 25 155 thousand m³ in 2023 as global consumption growth remained sluggish and import flows normalized.
