This growth coincided with supply tensions for coconut shell charcoal due to export restrictions in Indonesia, affecting regional availability and prices. Simultaneously, increased production and investments in charcoal briquettes, particularly in automated and eco-friendly plants, broadened the product range and stimulated demand.

In 2024, ongoing supply constraints for coconut shell charcoal and investments in multi-raw material production continued to influence the market. Strengthening international environmental regulations, such as PFAS standards, further boosted demand for activated carbon, impacting the wood charcoal supply chain in Oceania.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 4.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.4%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 387 tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 601 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when exports fell by 35.5%.
