Roasted, not decaffeinated coffee market in Sweden

The market volume for roasted, not decaffeinated coffee in Sweden showed modest growth in 2019, reaching 81,246 tons, but then contracted by over 3% in 2020 to 78,653 tons. This decline coincided with a global shift towards health-conscious consumption, as seen in rising demand for decaffeinated coffee in key markets, which likely reduced preference for regular roasted coffee among Swedish consumers.

By 2021, the market volume stabilized at 77,815 tons, while the market value began to recover, increasing to 368 million USD. From 2022 onwards, new EU regulations came into force, starting with the organic production and labeling rules that required suppliers to meet sustainable and socially responsible cultivation criteria for coffee sold in Sweden.

Further regulatory changes followed, including the EU Deforestation Regulation effective from late 2024, which mandates that coffee sold in the EU must not come from deforested land. Concurrently, the introduction of littering fees on single-use plastics, new rules for reusable cups in restaurants, and increased consumer demand for certified sustainable coffee began to shape the market's structure and supply chain.

The output was valued at 400.0 million US dollars, marking a slight increase of 1.0% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 16.9%, which translates to an annualized decline of 6.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 396.0 million US dollars, with the largest drop of 13.5% occurring that same year.

In 2020, 88,513 tonnes were produced, representing a small decrease of 2.8% from the previous year. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 91,169 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 3.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Denmark, Norway, and Finland were the main markets for Sweden's exports of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee in volume terms. Denmark accounted for 41.4% of exports, Norway for 17.9%, and Finland for 14.8%, together representing 74.2% of total export flows.

The export value reached 134.3 million US dollars, a moderate rise of 8.1% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 9.8%, with an annualized decline of 3.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 124.2 million US dollars, which also saw the largest drop of 12.2%.
