Between 2018 and 2024, the physical volume of the roasted coffee market in North Macedonia showed notable fluctuations. Starting at 5 672 t, it rose to a peak of 6 321 t in 2021 before easing to 5 952 t by 2024. Over this period, domestic production contracted from 4 382 t to 3 913 t, while imports expanded from 1 646 t to 2 393 t, increasingly supplementing local supply.

In contrast, the market's value demonstrated consistent growth, climbing from $31.7 million in 2018 to $44.0 million in 2024. This rise in total market value, despite the volatile volume trend, points to a significant increase in average prices. The price escalation was particularly evident in 2024, propelled by higher global coffee costs due to climate-related supply pressures and the implementation of the EU's deforestation regulation (EUDR), which mandates new traceability requirements and adds to operational expenses.

The market landscape was further shaped by evolving consumer preferences toward specialty and higher-grade coffee, mirrored by the growth of professional coffee shops in Skopje. Concurrent regulatory changes for food service establishments, including revised categorization rules, mandatory HACCP food safety systems, and adjusted tax rates, also altered the operating environment for coffee outlets during this period.

In 2020, output was valued at 20 338 thousand US dollars, marking a modest 5.6% decrease from 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 22 684 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 9.6%.

In 2020, the country produced 4 164 tonnes, representing a 5.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Production peaked in 2019 at 4 417 tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 5.5%.

After two years of growth, North Macedonia's exports of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee declined. In 2020, the country exported 360 tonnes, a slight 2.0% reduction from 2019. Exports reached their highest level in 2019 at 367 tonnes, with the largest annual increase recorded in 2018 at 21.0%. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 22.1%, equivalent to a compound annual growth rate of 6.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Montenegro, Serbia, and Bulgaria were the main destinations for North Macedonia's roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee exports by volume. Montenegro accounted for 27.8% of exports, Serbia for 21.3%, and Bulgaria for 7.4%, together representing 56.4% of total export volume.
