Earlier Report Observations

The entry of a new player with the 'O nosso café' brand in 2018 introduced innovative roasted bean coffee offerings, diversifying the market. However, a broader shift toward capsule consumption reduced the relevance of traditional segments like roasted coffee. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 sharply cut away-from-home coffee consumption, leading to a drop in market volume, even as at-home bean coffee use rose. By 2021, despite the ongoing capsule trend, the coffee and tea industry reported value growth, supported by major players such as Delta Cafés.

In 2022, the physical volume of the roasted, not decaffeinated coffee market in Portugal surged by over 50% to 57 994 tons, driven by an 8.3% expansion of the overall coffee market and rising exports. Simultaneously, international coffee prices climbed due to insufficient production, high logistics costs, and speculation, lifting the market value to $503.2 million. New labeling regulations requiring clear product denomination also came into effect. In 2023, while the market's monetary value continued growing to $522.3 million, physical volume fell to 42 480 tons, reflecting the impact of high prices on consumption and global robusta shortages.

In subsequent years, European deforestation legislation requiring coffee origin certification began affecting supply chains and prices, while consumers in Portugal showed increasing preference for sustainable and traceable coffee, influencing producer strategies.
