Earlier Report Observations

The roasted coffee market in Spain expanded from 145.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 178.3 thousand tons in 2024, despite a temporary contraction in 2020. Initial growth was supported by rising daily coffee consumption among Spaniards, who averaged 3.6 cups per day. After the 2020 downturn, the market rebounded strongly in 2021, fueled by the rapid development of the specialty coffee segment, a growing culture of premium coffee consumption, and increased interest in high-quality, sustainable beans.

The market's expansion continued as it entered the third wave of coffee, emphasizing quality, origin, and in-store experience. Logistics challenges stemming from international conflicts and new EU regulations requiring deforestation-free sourcing affected supply chains, but increased consumption in the hospitality sector and steady demand for high-quality coffee sustained market volume. By 2024, production and consumption kept rising, supported by enduring consumer habits and a maturing market for specialty and organic coffees, even amid higher prices driven by global raw material shortages.
