Earlier Report Observations

The Italian roasted coffee market volume stood at 209.5 thousand tons in 2018. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 profoundly altered consumption patterns, as bar closures and a shift to remote work boosted demand for at-home coffee, particularly capsules, pushing the market to 273.3 thousand tons. This trend accelerated in 2020, with health restrictions further strengthening online sales and the share of portioned coffee, leading to a sharp market expansion to 396.6 thousand tons.

Market volume contracted to 274.7 thousand tons in 2021, primarily due to supply chain delays from the Suez Canal blockage and a record spike in green coffee prices, which raised costs and squeezed consumer affordability. A recovery to 411.2 thousand tons followed in 2022, supported by continued growth in the capsule segment despite cost pressures from high energy and commodity prices. However, in 2023, high consumer price inflation directly reduced consumption volumes, causing the market to fall back to 272.6 thousand tons.

In 2024, the market volume decreased further to 252.1 thousand tons. During this period, the industry focused on enhancing sustainability, with certified coffee's share rising and biodegradable capsule development advancing. Italy's production capacity for roasted and soluble coffee exceeded 430 thousand tons, cementing its role as Europe's second-largest producer, while firms prepared for new food labeling regulations mandating additional allergen and nutritional information by 2025-2028.
