Earlier Report Observations

The Russian roasted coffee market expanded significantly from 66.6 thousand tons in 2018 to over 100 thousand tons by 2021. This growth was initially propelled by import substitution policies, which spurred domestic roasting companies to increase production. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further accelerated market volume as lockdowns shifted consumption towards packaged coffee for home use. Investment in new roasting capacities, including from state-affiliated and major international brands, drove a 23.8% production increase in 2021, supporting the overall market expansion.

From 2022 onwards, the market entered a contraction phase, with volume falling to 87.1 thousand tons by 2024. Western sanctions disrupted logistics and insurance, raising transport costs and reducing coffee imports. The exit of major international brands like Starbucks and Costa Coffee created openings for new market entrants, particularly in the capsule coffee segment. Despite the overall decline, the out-of-home coffee segment demonstrated resilience, with the number of coffee shops growing by 10% in 2023 as consumer habits continued to evolve.

Looking ahead to 2025, the industry is preparing for the mandatory digital labeling of coffee and tea under the 'Chestny Znak' system, effective from June 1, which requires Data Matrix codes on packaging. Domestic production is projected to continue its upward trajectory, supported by investments in new roasting lines and state subsidies for priority ingredient imports, contributing to a 9% output increase for the year.
