Earlier Report Observations

The Croatian roasted coffee market entered the period with a volume of 15 184 t in 2018, characterized by the dominance of Franck and the emerging development of the specialty coffee segment. The entry of new domestic brands and foreign processors, alongside a shift in consumer habits toward quality, particularly among younger populations, began reshaping the market. However, market volume declined to 14 491 t in 2019 and fell further to 13 729 t in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic led to cafe closures, despite a concurrent rise in home delivery of freshly roasted coffee and online sales.

A post-pandemic recovery in 2021 saw market volume increase to 14 363 t, while value jumped to $130.6 million, driven by the removal of restrictions and sustained demand for specialty and premium products, including capsules and coffee machines. Global increases in green coffee prices due to poor harvests in Brazil and Vietnam pushed costs upward. In 2022, a successful tourist season bolstered sales in the HoReCa channel, stabilizing volume at 14 213 t, while value rose to $140.2 million amid continued raw material shortages and higher logistics costs. This period also saw Atlantic Grupa launch the innovative Ziggy's Coffee shop chain and Barcaffè increase its market share to 18%.

From 2023 to 2024, market value continued its strong growth, reaching $178.2 million, primarily due to dramatic price increases for Arabica beans caused by poor harvests in Brazil, low global stocks, and geopolitical tensions. Market volume fluctuated, dipping to 13 771 t in 2023 before recovering to 14 251 t in 2024, reflecting the impact of high prices on consumption volumes alongside persistent consumer interest in premium segments such as certified and single-origin coffees.
