Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, the physical volume of Germany's roasted coffee market grew from 405.4 thousand tons to 420.6 thousand tons. This increase was supported by the introduction of new product formats like ground coffee, capsules, and ready-to-drink coffee, alongside a sustained trend of higher at-home consumption. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further boosted home coffee drinking due to lockdowns, which helped stabilize the market volume at 419.6 thousand tons despite broader economic disruptions.

From 2021 onward, market volume entered a gradual decline, falling to 347.9 thousand tons by 2024. This contraction was primarily driven by rising inflation and consumer financial uncertainty, which reduced overall household purchases. At the same time, the market shifted toward premium and sustainable products, including specialty coffee and Fairtrade-certified offerings, which increased the market's monetary value even as physical volumes shrank.

Structural changes during this period included the growing presence of small independent roasters emphasizing craft and sustainability, as well as the influence of ESG legislation pushing for more ethical practices. New segments such as cold brew, nitro coffee, and functional coffee gained traction, particularly among younger consumers, but did not reverse the overall downward trend in market volume.
