Earlier Report Observations
Quince production in Mexico remained stable at around 5 200 t in 2018 and 2019, then increased to 5 866 t in 2020. Fresh quince consumption stayed niche due to its astringent taste and hardness, with the fruit primarily used for preserves, jellies, jams, and liquors. National average prices ranged from $29 to $39 per kg in 2020.
After 2020, production declined, falling to 2 004 t by 2023. Prices rose toward the end of 2021, reaching $39–48 per kg, but showed a slight downward tendency by late 2022. Despite a broader growth in Mexico's fresh fruit market driven by demand for natural, organic, and sustainable diets, and despite promotional efforts for quince in municipalities like Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, quince output contracted. In 2023, low production in Zacatecas contributed to the continued drop, with prices stable compared to 2022, varying between 25 and 52 pesos depending on size and quality.
