Earlier Report Observations

The Senegalese primary sugar crops market, primarily sugarcane, opened the period with stable production around 1 390 thousand tonnes in 2019. This followed the adoption of a new Forest Code in late 2018, which modernized the management of forest and agricultural land, potentially providing a regulatory framework supporting cultivation.

Output then declined over 2020 and 2021, reaching a low of 1 260 thousand tonnes. This contraction coincided with reported adverse climatic conditions and poor access to production inputs, factors which were noted to have significantly reduced cereal harvests in the country, similarly impacting sugar crop yields.

A modest recovery began in 2022, with production reaching 1 280 thousand tonnes in 2023. This period was characterized by increased government budgetary support for agricultural inputs, including subsidies. However, this positive impetus was partly offset by global headwinds, namely the spike in fertilizer prices following the Russia-Ukraine war, which raised production costs.
