Production of primary sugar crops in Argentina fell from 18.6 million tons in 2018 to 14.5 million tons in 2023. Early in the period, output was supported by regulatory frameworks such as Law 26.093, which set a mandatory bioethanol blend in gasoline, and Law 25.715, which protected domestic producers through higher sugar import tariffs.

The decline accelerated notably in 2022 when a severe drought prompted an agricultural emergency declaration, drastically reducing harvest volumes. This weather-related shock remained a primary factor behind the contracting production figures through the end of the period.

Throughout these years, the industry continued to modernize with increased mechanization and the adoption of green harvesting techniques, aiming to improve efficiency despite the overall downward trend in crop output.
