Earlier Report Observations

Senegal's production of palm nuts and kernels remained stable between 2018 and 2021, fluctuating around 126-128 thousand tons. This stability was supported by substantial government commitment to the sector, including the integration of development costs totaling 6.1 billion CFA francs into the national budget for 2020-2024. During this period, the foundation for growth was laid through the development of improved oil palm plantations in the Sédhiou region, established in partnership with farmer associations and targeting sustainable or organic production alongside local processing industries.

Production rose by 4.3% to 132.1 thousand tons in 2022, driven by an expansion in trade and commercialization activities for palm nuts and derived products, as well as the continued development of peasant farming aiming to cultivate over 100,000 hectares. The following year, output moderated to 128.4 thousand tons. Concurrently, the market saw vigorous commercial offers for decorticated nuts, cakes, and shells with competitive prices, alongside ongoing efforts to develop processing infrastructure and seek export partners for value-added products like red palm oil.
