Production of primary sugar crops in the Democratic Republic of the Congo rose consistently from 2,223 thousand tons in 2018 to reach a high of 2,934 thousand tons in 2021. This represented a cumulative increase of over 30%, with the most notable annual growth of nearly 15% occurring in 2020.

Output fell sharply in 2022 by 17.6% to 2,416 thousand tons, interrupting the previous expansion. A partial recovery followed in 2023, as production stabilized and grew by 2.3% to 2,472 thousand tons, remaining below the peak level of 2021.

In 2024, the government launched a major agricultural campaign targeting the development of 60,000 hectares of new cultivated land nationwide. This initiative, which prioritizes food security and includes significant investment in rural infrastructure like farm-to-market roads, is shaping the policy environment for primary crop production.
