Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for prepared sweetcorn in SADC fluctuated between 2018 and 2023. It started at 12,347 metric tons in 2018, fell to 11,481 metric tons in 2019, then recovered to 12,520 metric tons in 2020. Growth continued to 12,715 metric tons in 2021 and peaked at 13,161 metric tons in 2022, before declining to 12,127 metric tons in 2023.

During this period, global factors emerged that shaped the market environment. The European Union's imposition of anti-dumping duties on Chinese sweetcorn imports altered trade flows, potentially affecting SADC export opportunities. Simultaneously, seed companies like Rijk Zwaan and Sakata Seed Corporation introduced new high-yield sweet corn varieties, which could enhance agricultural productivity. Consumer preferences also shifted towards frozen and fresh sweetcorn over canned products, driven by nutritional and packaging concerns.
