Earlier Report Observations

The prepared pork market in India began the period at a high level of around 1 million tonnes in 2018, supported by rising incomes, urbanization, and a growing middle class which significantly increased demand for processed meat products. State-owned slaughterhouses helped maintain safety standards and consumer trust. A slight dip to 959 thousand tonnes in 2019 occurred as the industry began adopting new processing technologies and advanced cold chain logistics to improve product preservation and distribution.

Market volume contracted sharply to 708 thousand tonnes in 2020, primarily due to global supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the availability of processing inputs and export logistics. Concurrently, regulatory focus on food safety and traceability intensified, leading to stricter enforcement of labeling and packaging requirements for processed meats.

A recovery phase followed, with the market growing to 802 thousand tonnes in 2021 and 944 thousand tonnes in 2022. This rebound was facilitated by the industry's adaptation to post-pandemic conditions, including policy shifts encouraging sustainable processing and changes in distribution regulations that expanded cold chain infrastructure. The entry of new players focusing on niche segments and the launch of new production facilities with advanced technologies further boosted domestic supply. However, the market volume declined again to 844 thousand tonnes in 2023, a period marked by a notable drop in meat product exports and continued evolution of consumer preferences towards healthier and more convenient options.
