Earlier Report Observations

After a period of relative stability, production of maize bran, sharps and residues in India declined from 1 013 thousand tons in 2018 to 689 thousand tons in 2020. This drop was driven by global maize price volatility and supply chain disruptions, with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further dampening demand and logistics across the processing sector.

Output stabilized around 690 thousand tons in 2021-2022. Government initiatives such as Minimum Support Price (MSP) adjustments supported maize cultivation and raw material supply for processors. In November 2021, Chinese food-processing company Fufeng Group announced plans for a USD 700 million corn wet milling plant in India, while the 'One District, One Factory' policy encouraged the development of additional processing facilities.

Production rebounded to 928 thousand tons in 2023, with the industry supported by ongoing capacity expansion and consistent downstream demand from pharmaceuticals, food processing and other sectors. Major players like Anil Limited operated large wet-milling facilities, and consumer preference for convenient powder forms of starch derivatives provided market stability.
