Market volume stood at 18.6 thousand tons in 2018 but dropped to 11.6 thousand tons in 2019 as exports surged to 31 thousand tons. A recovery followed in 2020 and 2021, with volumes reaching 13.8 thousand tons and 16.2 thousand tons respectively, supported by lower export levels. The sector remained dominated by large integrated companies focused on export markets in Asia and Europe.

From 2022, the introduction of stricter animal welfare rules under Royal Decree 159/2023 prompted an increase in the slaughter of breeding sows, affecting production patterns. Combined with reduced demand from key export markets like China, these factors contributed to a decline in market volume to 11.5 thousand tons in 2022 and further to 9.7 thousand tons in 2023, despite steady domestic pork consumption.
