From 2018 to 2019, India's coconut oilcake market volume grew from 456 thousand tonnes to 477 thousand tonnes, supported by the country's long-established solvent extraction industry and extensive coconut cultivation area of over 2.1 million hectares, which ensured raw material availability. Government financial assistance of US$ 10 million in 2021 aimed to expand coconut cultivation by 4,078 hectares and establish six new processing units for value-added products, laying groundwork for future production capacity.

After 2021, the market volume contracted sharply, falling to 357 thousand tonnes by 2023. This decline was primarily driven by a significant reduction in imports, linked to the government's restrictive import policy on coconut oil and copra. Concurrently, supply constraints emerged due to droughts, heatwaves, and pest issues in key growing states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which pushed up coconut prices and limited raw material availability. During this period, Marico Limited entered the market with Saffola Cold Pressed Oils, reflecting shifting consumer preferences toward health-focused edible oil products.

In 2020, India produced 203.4 K t of coconut oilcake, representing a 3.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Production reached its lowest point in 2018 at 193.7 K t, which marked a significant 20.9% decline from 2017. However, output rebounded in 2019 with an 8.9% increase. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, production fell by 17%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 6.0%.

Export volumes showed notable fluctuations during the period. The lowest point occurred in 2020 with just 0.1 K t, representing a sharp 52.7% decrease from the previous year. In contrast, exports peaked in 2018 at 0.4 K t, which was a substantial 92.7% increase from 2017. The difference between the peak in 2018 and the low in 2020 was 3.2-fold.

From 2017 to 2020, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Singapore were the primary destinations for India's coconut oilcake exports in volume terms. Bangladesh accounted for 37.5% of exports, Nepal for 27.4%, and Singapore for 15.0%. Together, these three markets represented 80.0% of India's total export flows during this period.

After two consecutive years of decline, India's coconut oilcake exports in value terms showed a modest recovery in 2020, reaching 89 K $ US—a 0.7% increase from the previous year. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 88 K $ US, following a significant 60.8% drop in 2018. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, export values decreased by 71.6%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 34.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Singapore, Bangladesh, and Nepal remained the key markets for India's coconut oilcake exports in value terms.
