Production of prepared mushrooms and truffles in Africa showed consistent growth, rising from 6 763 tonnes in 2018 to 11 549 tonnes in 2023. This increase in domestic output contributed to the overall market volume, even as imports fluctuated.

Market volume peaked at 28 571 tonnes in 2019, driven by a surge in imports to 20 652 tonnes. Subsequently, import levels declined, leading to a reduction in market volume to 24 454 tonnes in 2020 and a period of stabilization around 24 000 tonnes.

From 2020 onwards, the market volume remained relatively stable, with minor variations reflecting changes in import flows, while local production continued to expand steadily.

Africa's production of prepared mushrooms and truffles has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 9 034 tonnes, marking a solid 13.3% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 57.2%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 16.3%.

Africa's production of prepared mushrooms and truffles has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 324.2 million US dollars, showing a 21.0% advance compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 36.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 11.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 223.5 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 5.8%.

Exports prepared mushrooms and truffles from Africa

Exports in kind, t

Africa's export volume of prepared mushrooms and truffles has risen for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 88 tonnes, a sharp 54.3% year-on-year increase. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 41.9%, averaging an annual decline of 16.6%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 50 tonnes, which also experienced the largest drop of 67.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export landscape for prepared mushrooms and truffles in volume terms was diverse. France accounted for 3.3% of exports, Spain for 1.5%, and Canada for 0.8%, together making up just 5.7% of total flows. The remaining 94.3% was distributed among a wide range of other countries.

After two years of growth, Africa's export value of prepared mushrooms and truffles declined. In 2020, exports totaled 660 thousand US dollars, a 50.4% decrease from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 41.5%, with an annualized decline of 16.3%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 332 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 12.4%.

The country composition of exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 was dispersed. France contributed 18.0% of exports, Spain 9.3%, and Canada 6.0%, together forming only 33.3% of total flows. The remaining 66.7% was split among a wide variety of other destinations.

In 2020, Africa imported 15 508 tonnes of prepared mushrooms and truffles, a significant 24.9% decline from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 14.6%, with an average annual decline of 5.1%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 15 187 tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 20 652 tonnes, which also recorded the largest increase of 36.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, France, and the Netherlands were the key sources for imports in volume terms. China accounted for 61.7% of imports, France for 10.3%, and the Netherlands for 10.1%, together making up 82.1% of total flows.

In 2020, Africa's imports of prepared mushrooms and truffles totaled 21 202 thousand US dollars, a significant 16.8% year-on-year decrease. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 5.8%, with an average annual decline of 2.0%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 20 801 thousand US dollars, while the highest was in 2019 at 25 494 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 22.6%.
