Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the African market for homogenised jams, jellies, marmalades, purées and pastes grew from 7 033 t to 9 654 t. This expansion was driven by a sharp increase in domestic production, which more than tripled from 2 519 t to 8 045 t over the same period. While imports remained substantial, exceeding 5 000 t annually, exports surged from just 208 t in 2018 to 4 844 t in 2023, reflecting growing international sales.

In 2024, South Africa's agricultural exports reached a record high, with fruits such as citrus, grapes and apples forming a significant share. This growth in raw material availability supported the production of processed fruit products like jams and purées across the region. Intra-African trade in agricultural goods continued to be important despite market access challenges, facilitating the flow of ingredients. At the same time, moderating food inflation in early 2024 likely helped maintain consumer demand for these products.
