Earlier Report Observations

The Yemeni poultry meat market expanded from 365 thousand tons in 2018 to 533 thousand tons in 2020, driven by a sharp rise in imports from 12 thousand tons to 147 thousand tons. This surge was supported by changes in consumer food behavior as high meat prices and reduced purchasing power shifted demand toward more affordable poultry. Simultaneously, a decline in livestock production caused by war, drought, and feed shortages reduced domestic red meat availability, increasing reliance on poultry imports.

After 2020, market volume stabilized, reaching a peak of 546 thousand tons in 2021 before declining to 508 thousand tons in 2022 and recovering slightly to 518 thousand tons in 2023. Domestic poultry output continued a slow climb, while imports fluctuated. Ongoing conflict, rising transport and feed costs, and high inflation constrained further market growth during this period. In 2024, efforts by the Supply Ministry to inject fresh and frozen meat into the market helped maintain product availability.
