Earlier Report Observations

Yemen's chicken meat and offal market volume grew significantly from 187.9 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 346.0 thousand tonnes in 2021. This expansion was driven by a surge in imports, which rose from 11.3 to 147.1 thousand tonnes, alongside steady growth in domestic production from 176.6 to 198.9 thousand tonnes. The increase in local output was supported by government-led initiatives, including the launch of automated feed production lines in 2019 and the distribution of over 222 poultry plant licenses in 2020 to attract new investors and modernize infrastructure.

A pivotal shift occurred in 2022 with the government's ban on frozen poultry imports, aimed at stimulating domestic production. Imports fell sharply to 108.5 thousand tonnes, causing the total market volume to decline to 308.0 thousand tonnes, even as production stabilized at 199.5 thousand tonnes. The enforcement of the import ban in 2023 led to the restart of approximately 1,500 local farms, contributing to a slight recovery in production to 200.5 thousand tonnes and a market volume increase to 317.1 thousand tonnes, marking a structural move toward greater self-sufficiency.
