Earlier Report Observations

The poultry meat market in Mauritania grew from 35 155 metric tons in 2018 to 61 590 metric tons in 2023, a rise of over 75%. This expansion was primarily driven by a sustained increase in imports, which more than doubled from 25 565 metric tons to 51 761 metric tons. In 2019, the government explicitly supported poultry imports to meet rapidly growing consumer demand fueled by population growth, urbanization, and dietary diversification, setting a trend that continued throughout the period.

Alongside import growth, the state implemented a comprehensive program to develop domestic production. The launch of the Société Mauritanienne de Volaille (SMV) in 2018, with a weekly capacity of 200 000 chicks, marked the start of modern local infrastructure. The national livestock development program (2018-2025) formalized targets for self-sufficiency. Subsequent measures included the establishment of the state-owned Mauritanienne des Produits de l’Élevage (MPE) in 2021 to regulate the sector, an additional tax on imported poultry meat from 2021 to 2023 to protect local producers, and new traceability and labeling requirements enforced in 2022. These efforts contributed to a gradual rise in domestic output from 9 590 metric tons to 9 829 metric tons.

In the later years, policy focus remained on strengthening the sector's foundations. The first general livestock census in 2023 provided data for improved planning, while in 2024, the government confirmed ongoing investments to modernize hatcheries and feed mills. Regional factors, such as rising grain and oil prices affecting feed costs, also entered consideration, prompting discussions on potential subsidies to stabilize meat prices.
