Uganda's poultry meat market volume stood at 183 thousand tonnes in 2018, supported by growing consumer demand for affordable protein and the emergence of new market segments. A decline to 158.8 thousand tonnes followed in 2019, before a modest recovery to 163.6 thousand tonnes in 2020, influenced by a shift towards local products during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A dramatic expansion occurred in 2021, with the market volume surging by 61.5% to 264.2 thousand tonnes. This sharp increase was driven by the growth of regional demand for Ugandan poultry and continued product diversification, including value-added offerings.

Market growth moderated thereafter, reaching 265 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 268.2 thousand tonnes in 2023. This period of stabilization was underpinned by sustained consumer preference for quality, convenient products and ongoing marketing innovations within the sector.

Uganda's poultry meat and offal production reached 163,872 tonnes in 2020, marking a modest 3.2% increase from 2019. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production declined by 7.7%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 2.6%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 158,792 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2018 with 183,578 tonnes. The most significant drop was observed in 2019, falling by 13.5%, whereas the largest increase was in 2018, rising by 3.4%.

Uganda's poultry meat and offal production has declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 391.5 million US dollars, reflecting a slight decrease of 1.6% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value fell by 26.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -9.7%.

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the timeframe. Exports varied significantly, with a 4.6-fold difference between the low in 2017 and the high in 2018. In 2020, Uganda exported 497.1 tonnes of poultry meat and offal, representing a substantial improvement of 95.3% from the previous year. The maximum volume was recorded in 2018 at 950.2 tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 73.2%, while the largest increase was in 2018, surging by 361.0%.

In 2020, Uganda exported 1,188 thousand US dollars worth of poultry meat and offal, which is 86.2% higher than in 2019. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 2,567 thousand US dollars. The largest decline was in 2019, falling by 75.2%, while the largest increase was in 2018, rising by 316.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, Thailand, and the United States were the main sources of poultry meat and offal imports to Uganda, together absorbing 72.1% of total imports in volume terms. Specifically, Belgium accounted for 34.2%, Thailand for 19.0%, and the United States for 18.9%.
