The poultry meat market in French Polynesia showed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. The period began with the implementation of strict biosecurity requirements for meat imports in 2018, including mandatory veterinary certificates and import permits for poultry, establishing a regulated trade environment. Despite these controls, market volume grew to 50 679 t in 2019 before contracting to 44 739 t in 2020, a decline likely connected to the global COVID-19 pandemic's impact on supply chains and demand.

A sharp recovery followed in 2021, with the market reaching 54 911 t, but this gain was not sustained. Volumes fell moderately in 2022 and then more significantly to 41 321 t in 2023. During that same year, regulatory changes led to the lifting of import restrictions on chilled and frozen poultry meat from several countries, including France, Belgium, and Denmark, following the removal of avian influenza restriction zones. This policy shift may facilitate future imports, although it coincided with a market contraction in 2023.

Further adjustments to import procedures are scheduled for 2024, with modifications to the application process for animal-origin food import permits effective from August 2024, indicating ongoing evolution in the trade policy framework for this sector.
