Throughout the period, imports remained the dominant component of market volume, consistently exceeding domestic production. Local poultry output gradually declined from 1 513 metric tons in 2019 to 1 118 metric tons in 2023, while import volumes fluctuated sharply, driving the overall market dynamics.

In São Tomé and Príncipe, poultry meat and offal production reached 1 409.6 tonnes in 2020, marking a 6.8% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 8.3%, with an average annual decline of 2.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 307.1 tonnes, which also saw the largest drop of 14.9%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase, with production rising by 15.7%.

In 2020, the country imported a total of 2 910 tonnes, reflecting a moderate year-on-year decrease of 7.6%. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 49.9%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 14.4%. The peak import volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 149 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 37.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Belgium were the leading sources of poultry meat and offal imports into São Tomé and Príncipe in terms of volume. The Netherlands accounted for 25.1% of imports, Portugal for 20.9%, and Belgium for 12.4%. Together, these three countries represented 58.4% of total import flows.
