From 2018 to 2020, the beef and buffalo meat market in Sao Tome and Principe was characterized by initial efforts to reduce import dependency through state and international investments in animal production centers and the formation of producer cooperatives. Domestic production rose steadily, reaching 228 t in 2020, but total market volume eased to 242 t that year as imports fell under programs supported by the African Development Bank aimed at boosting local supply.

Between 2021 and 2023, continued focus on genetic improvement, rehabilitation of farming units, and stronger producer organization led to a sharp rise in domestic output, which jumped from 257 t in 2021 to 391 t in 2023. The adoption of international sanitary regulations and market access agreements for Brazilian beef further structured the sector, helping total market volume expand to 407 t by 2023.
