Earlier Report Observations

The Czech poultry meat market began the period with expanded production capacities, as domestic slaughterhouses increased output by 3.4% in 2018, supporting overall supply. This growth coincided with rising imports, primarily from Poland, which intensified competitive pressure. During these years, EU-wide mandatory origin labeling for fresh and frozen poultry meat, enacted in 2015, continued to shape market transparency and traceability. By 2020, production edged higher, with new technical requirements for product packaging introduced, affecting manufacturer processes and costs.

A key boost came in 2021 when the absence of avian influenza outbreaks in Czech territory reduced veterinary restrictions, facilitating trade and contributing to a production peak of 348.6 thousand tons. This expansion reversed sharply in 2022 as soaring inflation and high feed and energy costs elevated production expenses, squeezing margins and leading to a output contraction. The following year saw a tripling of poultry imports from Ukraine, prompting the EU to impose anti-dumping duties to shield domestic producers. Concurrently, the market witnessed the entry of new players, with two Czech startups receiving EU registration to produce cultivated meat, signaling the emergence of an innovative segment.

By 2024, imports continued their upward trajectory, reaching 151.2 thousand tons, supported by the growing share of e-commerce where strict rules on origin labeling for unpackaged foods already apply. The sector is also preparing for new EU-supported agricultural programs and forthcoming storage and labeling regulations set to take effect in 2026, which are expected to influence future investment and operational standards in the poultry industry.
