Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the poultry meat and offal market in Seychelles saw a slight contraction in total volume from 5 301 t to 5 221 t, while domestic production more than doubled from 1 250 t to 2 029 t. This shift was supported by state-owned enterprises like the Seychelles Agricultural Development Company (Sadeco) and the Islands Development Company (IDC), which operated poultry farms, and by local farmers adopting improved rearing techniques that increased the availability of domestic poultry. However, the national focus on fisheries and aquaculture as priority sectors, coupled with limited interest among young people in agricultural work, kept overall market growth in check during this period.

The market expanded sharply in 2021, reaching 6 519 t, and grew further to 6 959 t in 2022, with production peaking at 3 056 t. This growth coincided with the government's broader push to encourage investments in local food production, including aquaculture, which likely helped bolster overall agricultural capacity. Imports of poultry also increased during these years, reflecting sustained consumer demand.

In 2023, the market volume stabilized at 6 919 t as production fell to 2 202 t. During this period, large-scale agricultural projects on Coëtivy Island aimed to increase local output, potentially including poultry. At the same time, trade developments with Réunion introduced higher-quality, antibiotic-free poultry meat to the Seychellois market, aligning with evolving consumer preferences.
