From 2018 to 2019, the poultry meat and offal market volume in CIS increased from 6.6 million tonnes to 6.8 million tonnes. This growth was driven by continued production expansion, aided by the entry of new players and capacity expansion in poultry farming since 2017. State support for exports, including logistics subsidies, strengthened domestic producers and boosted shipments to CIS and Asia-Pacific countries. In 2019, new storage and sale requirements for perishable products enhanced quality standards, while exports to China, Saudi Arabia, and Kazakhstan rose significantly.

In 2020, market volume slightly declined to 6.6 million tonnes, primarily due to reinforced state export support that increased export shipments to 377 thousand tonnes. The COVID-19 pandemic affected market conditions, but production remained stable. By 2021, the market recovered to 6.8 million tonnes, supported by new processing and packaging technologies and ongoing export growth. Legislative updates, such as stricter labeling and packaging rules, improved product transparency and safety.

Market volume continued to grow thereafter, reaching 7.2 million tonnes in 2023. This sustained increase was fueled by record production and exports, with China becoming the key driver by increasing offal purchases more than sevenfold. Concurrently, poultry meat imports from China surged fivefold in 2023, altering market structure. State export incentives, including logistics subsidies, and evolving regulations on perishable storage shaped the market. The rising share of semi-finished and ready-to-eat poultry products, accounting for 35% of new product launches in 2024, reflected shifting consumer preferences toward convenience.

Poultry meat and offal production in the CIS has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, output reached 6 534 K t, remaining stable compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production increased by 4.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.4%.

Following two years of growth, poultry meat and offal production in the CIS declined in value terms. In 2020, output was valued at 12 799 M $ US, down 3.1% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value increased by 14.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.5%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 13 208 M $ US, which also saw the largest annual increase of 14.7%.

Exports poultry meat and offal from CIS

Poultry meat and offal exports from the CIS have risen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 376.5 K t, marking a significant 22.9% increase over 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 65.5%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 18.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export partner portfolio for poultry meat and offal from the CIS was quite broad. China accounted for 16.1% of exports in kind, Ukraine for 13.7%, and Vietnam for 8.8%, with these three countries together representing only 38.5% of total flows.

The value of poultry meat and offal exports from the CIS has increased for the third year running. In 2020, exports amounted to 737.6 M $ US, showing a solid 18.9% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 80.9%, translating to an annualized rate of 21.8%.

During 2017-2020, China, Ukraine, and Vietnam were the largest buyers of poultry meat and offal from the CIS in value terms, contributing 23.4%, 10.7%, and 4.5% of exports, respectively. However, their combined share was limited to 38.6% of total export value, indicating a diversified country structure.

Imports poultry meat and offal to CIS

In 2020, the CIS imported 490.3 K t of poultry meat and offal, reflecting an 11.9% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 8%, with a compound annual decline of 2.8%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 465.6 K t, following a 12.7% drop that year. In contrast, 2019 saw the highest import volume at 556.6 K t, with a 19.5% increase.

The import partner structure for poultry meat and offal in kind remained fragmented from 2017 to 2020. The United States accounted for 25.0% of imports, Brazil for 14.5%, and Ukraine for 10.1%, with these three countries together making up just 49.6% of total flows, and no single country holding a dominant share.

After two years of growth, poultry meat and offal imports to the CIS declined in value. In 2020, import volume amounted to 691.9 M $ US, a strong 11.3% decrease from 2019. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 780.1 M $ US, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 13.1%.
