Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the pig fat market in CIS expanded from 164 thousand tons to 201 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by a significant increase in domestic production, which rose from 129 thousand tons to 193 thousand tons. The entry of new players and the launch of new processing facilities boosted output, while imports fell sharply from 41 thousand tons to 11 thousand tons, reflecting a strong shift toward import substitution.

State-owned agri-holdings and supportive government policies for the pork industry strengthened local producers. Legislative changes, including new labeling and quality requirements for animal fats, along with updated sanitary and phytosanitary norms, helped standardize the market. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 affected supply chains, but production continued its upward trend as companies modernized older facilities.

From 2021 onward, sanctions and geopolitical factors accelerated the decline in imports and spurred further investment in production modernization. Consumer preferences increasingly favored domestic products, sustaining internal demand. These developments, combined with the ongoing influence of large agricultural holdings, supported the market's steady growth to 201 thousand tons by 2023.
