Earlier Report Observations
The pork market in Kyrgyzstan contracted significantly from 17 823 tons in 2018 to 6 824 tons in 2023. This decline was driven by a collapse in domestic production, which fell from 16 871 tons to 6 137 tons over the same period. Key factors included a persistent lack of systemic state support for the meat industry, insufficient investment resources, and ongoing problems with feed quality and veterinary services, which hindered modernization and efficiency in pig farming.
Compounding the production challenges, the absence of large-scale state-owned meat processing facilities limited market development. Meanwhile, imported frozen beef became a more attractive alternative for consumers due to price instability and better perceived value, further reducing demand for domestic pork. Although overall meat demand in the country grew, particularly from the restaurant sector, this demand was increasingly met by beef imports rather than local pork.
By 2023, the pork market had shrunk to less than half its 2018 size, with no major new production capacities or legislative changes to reverse the trend. The industry continued to face structural weaknesses, including fragmented animal husbandry practices and reliance on small-scale producers without access to improved technologies.
