This expansion was supported by stricter veterinary controls, including the introduction of subcutaneous microchip identification for horses and tightened border checks due to livestock disease outbreaks in neighboring countries. These measures enhanced product safety and reinforced domestic production. Furthermore, live horse exports exceeding $2 million in 2020 stimulated breeding activity within the industry.

Market volume continued to rise, reaching 30.6 thousand tons in 2022. State support programs for livestock farming and regional factors, such as the absence of significant horse meat exports from Kazakhstan, contributed to this growth. Temporary import restrictions due to epizootics in the region also bolstered domestic market conditions.

In 2023, the market stabilized at 30.3 thousand tons, a slight decrease of less than 1% from the previous year. This occurred alongside a 2% increase in the national horse population and ongoing industry initiatives, including pedigree horse exhibitions and auctions in Bishkek, indicating underlying resilience and development potential.

Horse, donkey, and mule meat production in Kyrgyzstan rose for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 26 274 tonnes, marking a 6.8% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 6.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.0%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 23 762 tonnes, which also saw the steepest decline of 4.1%.
