Pork production in Burkina Faso increased from 315 thousand tons in 2018 to 321 thousand tons in 2019. This growth was supported by the introduction of government quality standards for meat safety, which helped structure the sector and boost consumer confidence. Simultaneously, consistently rising demand, particularly in urban areas, and the organization of pig farmers into groups to better meet market needs further stimulated output.

Production fell sharply to 210 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 176 thousand tons in 2021. The primary driver was severe flooding in 2020 after the gates of the Bagré dam were opened, which destroyed local rice fields and drastically reduced the availability of feed for pigs. This supply shock persisted into 2021, with high production costs and logistical challenges hindering any quick recovery in the sector.

A gradual recovery began in 2022, with production reaching 180 thousand tons, and continued to 185 thousand tons in 2023. This upturn was fueled by sustained consumer demand, especially in major cities, and ongoing efforts to improve product quality and safety. However, supply remained insufficient to meet demand, leading to higher retail prices and indicating that the market was still recovering from the earlier feed supply disruption.

After two consecutive years of growth, Burkina Faso's pork production declined. In 2020, the country produced 210.4 thousand tons of pork, representing a 34.4% decrease from the previous year.
