Earlier Report Observations

The Portuguese pork market maintained stable volume around 374 thousand tons in 2018-2019, supported by key domestic players like FRESBEIRA and MAPORAL strengthening the national value chain. However, market volume fell sharply to 310.5 thousand tons in 2020 as the sector adapted production to external regulatory and market factors within the European context.

After a further decline to 291.3 thousand tons in 2021, the market rebounded to 337.5 thousand tons in 2022, driven by innovations in chilled supply chains and the launch of new convenient frozen products such as Seara Shawaya. Growth continued in 2023 with volume reaching 360.9 thousand tons and value surging to 1 328 million $, fueled by a consumer preference shift toward fresh and chilled meat alongside strong export growth led by companies like ICM Pork expanding internationally.
